The cutting of metals, a key stage in many production processes, requires lubricants to reduce tool wear and dissipate generated heat. Traditional lubricants impose a high cost on manufacturers (accounting for up to 20% of the total costs) and on the environment. As such lubricants can affect the health of operators, regulators and insurers strictly control the whole field.

Therefore, companies and governments are under pressure to find alternatives.

There is an European project, called LEPOCUT project, which deconstructed the cutting process and looked at each element to make it cheaper, better and less polluting. Participants in this project included makers of tools, lubricants and coatings, as well as end-users and research institutes.

Part of the project is destinated to develop a new PVD coating which will enable manufacturers to cut dry.

Dry cutting technology works by applying a wear-resistant hard coating to tools, to take over the function of the lubricant and to increase the tool’s lifespan.

Dry cutting is still relatively novel in industry, but JULIA UTENSILI is strictly following the results of this project and also looking into this matter in our R&D dpt., studying and testing new surface coatings.

We are trying to obtain some results in this important part of the cutting process in order to help our customers in reducing cutting costs and obtaining better performances of our tools.

Il taglio dei metalli, un momento chiave in molti processi produttivi, richiede l’uso di lubrorefrigeranti per ridurre l’usura degli utensili e dissipare il calore generato. I lubrorefrigeranti tradizionali impongono alti costi agli utilizzatori (fino al 20% del costo totale del taglio) e all’ambiente; possono inoltre danneggiare la salute degli operatori, e quindi l’intera materia viene controllata attentamente da istituti di vigilanza ed assicuratori.

Fabbriche e governi sono quindi sotto pressione per cercare alternative ai lubrorefrigeranti.

Il progetto europeo LEPOCUT scompone l’intero processo di taglio ed esamina ogni suo elemento per renderlo più economico, migliore e con minor impatto ambientale. I partecipanti a questo progetto includono costruttori di utensili, lubrificanti e trattamenti superficiali, utilizzatori ed Istituti di ricerca.

Una parte di questo progetto viene riservata allo sviluppo di un nuovo trattamento PVD che consenta il taglio a secco.

La tecnologia del taglio a secco è resa possibile applicando un trattamento superficiale ad alta resistenza all’usura sull’utensile, per eliminare la funzione del lubrorefrigerante ed aumentare la vita dell’utensile.

Il taglio a secco è relativamente nuovo nell’industria, ma la JULIA UTENSILI sta seguendo attentamente i risultati di questo progetto e, contemporaneamente, il nostro reparto R&D sta studiando e testando nuovi trattamenti superficiali.

Stiamo cercando di ottenere alcuni risultati in questa importante parte del processo di taglio per riuscire ad aiutare i nostri clienti a ridurne i costi ed ottenere migliori prestazioni dai nostri utensili.
